About Haggis Membership

The Hawkeye Area Grand Gaelic Isles Society (H.A.G.G.I.S.) is a not-for-profit organization formed in 1991.

HAGGIS is affiliated with the Scottish Heritage Society of Iowa (SHSI), a state-wide group consisting of HAGGIS (Hawkeye Chapter), and Scottish groups in Des Moines and the Quad Cities.  We are pleased that the current SHSI President is our own member, Anne Gerdts.

H.A.G.G.I.S. held its first Burns Supper in January '91, to honor the poet, Robert Burns, and their first “All Things Scottish" festival in the autumn of 1991.

A main focus of the club is to familiarize our children and membership with the traditions and the culture of our Scottish heritage.  We are a family-oriented organization and try to provide family and children's activities.  We also use funds raised to support our members' pursuit of academics through scholarships, and foster Scottish and Celtic culture through grants available to members or affiliates for such things as piping and highland dance lessons, needed costuming and the like.

Our elected officers (Executive Board), and the HAGGIS Council, which consists of our appointed officers and our advisory board members, plan activities and events at monthly meetings to which all members are welcome to attend.  These meetings are held on the 25th of the month.  Please contact an officer to find out meeting times and places,  or if you wish to be more active in the club and become a Council member.
