About H.A.G.G.I.S

The Hawkeye Area Grand Gaelic Isles Society is a not-for-profit (350KB .pdf file) organization which began in 1991 when a group of people decided there was a need for a focus on Scottish culture in the Cedar Rapids-Iowa City area of Eastern Iowa. Some were Scottish, some were of Scottish descent, and some were interested in various areas of Scottish culture, but all wanted to have fun and enjoy each other's company. We call them "Our Founders".

That same year, the group affiliated with the Scottish Heritage Society of Iowa (SHSI).  HAGGIS  held their first Burns Supper in January, 1991, and their first "All Things Scottish Festival"  that autumn.  This  has now evolved into "All Things Scottish" Celtic Fest, a large event which  is open to the public in the autumn of each year.  The Burns Supper has been held each year and is open to members, and family or friends of members.  Other member events held during the year may include Tartan Day, Guy Fawkes Bonfire, St. Andrews Day, and picnics.

H.A.G.G.I.S. cooks and bakers turn out some delicious and tempting Scottish fare at many of the gatherings, including our very own recipes for haggis, tatties and neeps for the Burns Supper, and various offerings of Scots shortbread, fairy cakes, trifle, scones, fruit squares and the like. People attending our tea rooms marvel at the assortment of goodies presented.
